Maternal Model - Amnio/Cordo/Laparoscopic Sim

This model is no longer available, as it has been replaced by the Universal Maternal Abdomen (click here)

(Please contact me directly for more information regarding this model)

This life-like maternal model is durably constructed from plastic and silicone rubber. It is multi-functional, as it is designed to accommodate a variety of fetal sizes and prenatal procedures (amniocentesis, cordocentesis, and laparoscopic procedures). This model can be used with ultrasound to observe the interior cavity of the amniotic sac*. The removable clear plastic access hatch facilitates the repositioning of the fetus and/or placenta. This hatch also provides a unique perspective of the interior for observation of clinical procedures.

The amniotic cavity is designed to be refilled with tap water. The silicone rubber abdomen can be punctured with a variety of needle sizes up to 20ga and the abdominal surface will self-seal (please note that punctures produced by large scopes may create a leak after the scope is removed).

This unit includes a 24-week old silicone fetus with umbilical cord and placenta that is designed to accommodate cordocentesis procedures.

Although the ultrasound properties of this unit are basic, it has been very effective in teaching the fundamentals of amniocentesis.

This project was created with the support, guidance, and medical expertise of Dr. Rory Windrim and Dr. Richard Pittini. Additional contributions and medical expertise were provided by Dr. D. Oepkes, Dr. K. Macrury, Dr. R. Reznick, and Dr. J. Beyene.

This model was used in a clinical trial and published in the medical journal: Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology, Volume 19, Issue 5, pages 478–483, 1 May 2002. This publication, “Teaching Invasive Perinatal Procedures: Assessment of a High Fidelity Simulator-Based Curriculum” can be viewed at:  (click here)

*Please note that the ultrasound visualization quality on this model is basic and some visual artifacts may be visible.

**Light needle tracks may remain after the needle has been removed.
